Obituary
John Godwin, of Trevethin, South Wales, was the son of Jack & Eileen Godwin, brother to Philip & Robert Godwin. He was a loving husband to his dear wife of 60 years, Marianne Godwin, and father to Sarah & Joanna. Grandfather to Mathew & Daniel. A dear and respected uncle to all his nephews & nieces.

Rising from humble beginnings in the valleys of South Wales, John had an exceptional mind and an ingrained determination to do well in life, graduating with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Manchester University. Soon, his intellect and adventurous spirit saw him travelling the world, carving a life for himself and his family, living in countries such as Brazil, Germany, Belgium and Singapore. He worked across South America, the Middle East and Asia, and was held in high esteem wherever he went. John always had wonderful anecdotes about the places he had been. There are so many great stories of his exploits and achievements. A keen historian, lover of motorbikes, with a wry sense of humour. Deeply valued and loved by his family & friends. A good man, a resilient man, a Welshman.

Happy times & fond memories. That moustache! Legendary, and impossible to forget. That Welsh accented English. The wry humour. The desire to debate. The desire to enlighten all around him. The Oratory, the Baritone, the Man.

We are very sorry not to be with you on John’s send off as he starts his next journey. We know when he gets there it will be with a Welsh dragon, that beautiful moustache and the certainty that he will be conversing with everyone he meets.

    Cheers John!

Love to all, Nick & Family

It is with much sadness of the news of John snr's passing, he was such a fighter and held on for the love of his family for so long. He is greatly admired and was an inspiration to all especially my husband whose studies and career was that of an engineer, based on his uncles achievements. I greatly enjoyed my time getting to know John with just but a few visits in Paris CBD and Poitiers, our conversations lasted for hours and despite great distance we kept our conversations going. John had so much wisdom, experience and anecdotes to almost any topic, it was greatly appreciated. Being new to the family he made me feel welcomed, at ease and accepted, its so hard to believe he's not there. My heart goes out to you all, much love from Australia

Dear Sarah Massini, Joanna Godwin-Seidl and Marianne Godwin.

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. John was a great friend and cousin to my father as you know, but I also treasure the memories spent sailing with them both and our visits to your family in the U.K. and the farm in France.

John was an exceptional character in many ways and always the loudest and most friendly Welshman wherever he went. The ease at which he could converse with anyone in so many languages was an inspiration to me.

May John continue his wonderful journey and forever be a fond memory in our hearts. I hope he’s having a G’n’T with my Father and laughing about their adventures together.

I regret I’m unable to make the funeral, but please pass on my regards to your Mum and sister and let’s keep in touch.

    Our deepest sympathies,
    Christopher and Helen Sparks
